I was thrilled to have my knitted installation, Red is the colour of...., selected for New Contemporaries 2022. I was one of 47 selected emerging and early career artists. The exhibition was firstly installed across two galleries in Hull - Ferens and Humber Street; my work was at Humber Street Gallery. It then toured to South London Gallery in Peckham, London, where it was installed at their Firestation Gallery.
Here I am talking about my work at the South London Gallery:

‘The skill and care in the finish of Lou Baker's sculptural knitted installation elevates the suspended clots that unravel as they ooze towards the floor, indicating an entropy beyond human comprehension that flows through the exhibition.’

'Bloomberg New Contemporaries rarely disappoints. And this year is no exception.... ‘I left with two powerful impressions; that I had witnessed some very intimate and personal stories and also been treated to some serious comments wrapped up in witty irreverence…There is much more to see and reflect upon in this varied show. It illustrates the depth and extent of emerging artistic talent and provides a welcome and nourishing retreat from a world beset by turmoil and trouble.'

'Every year, New Contemporaries brings together the UK’s best young artists and recent graduates and whacks them all under one roof (or two roofs, in the case of South London Gallery and its adjacent Fire Station space). It acts as a sort of state-of-play for young art in this country, a way to take the pulse of creativity in the UK. And this year's showing is as good as ever. There's a bunch of painting, loads of installation, plenty of cleverness and oodles of ideas.'
