seam collective's A Visible THREAD exhibition, Fine Foundation, Durlston Country Park, Swanage, 16 May –  7 June 2023

This was the first iteration of seam collective's Arts Council-funded 4-venue exhibition tour in the South West of England. We also did a bonus A Visible THREAD exhibition at Wirth Gallery at Sherborne Girls' School in Sherborne, Dorset in January 2024. The official tour began in May 2023 and will finish at the end of August 2024. It's been wonderful to be part of it.

Here's a walkthrough video of A Visible THREAD at Fine Foundation Gallery:

And here's a blog post about the set up, written by Nina Gronw-Lewis.

I was delighted to install my Transitional objects for this exhibition and loved seeing how visitors interacted with them. I made these 5 touchable, body-like sculptures as part of my research into A Visible THREAD. I've written an in-depth blog post about them for seam, Busting someone else's stash: on collecting, sustainability and grief

I've also made a short video about them, showing some of the interactions:

I also set up a participatory installation and invited visitors to tie or weave some strips of cloth and yarn into it and add a message on a label. It was very lovely to see how it changed as the days went by.

I was very glad to be able to be in the gallery for several days during the course of the exhibition. We had many, many interested visitors, most of whom were walkers or holidaymakers who stumbled upon the gallery. Some people did come specifically to see the exhibition though.  As ever, it was great to spend time with some of the other seam members. There was even a small bungalow which we were able to use, so it felt like a kind of residency. During the two separate times I was there, I worked with Oly Bliss (making queer and subversive sculptures) and then with Penny Wheeler, offering visitors a drop in knitting and weaving Social knitwork . It was such a lovely place to be ...and the gallery has the most fabulous views!
